Hotels near Caird Hall
A building of great stature, the Caird Hall offers a unique blend of grandeur, heritage and traditional Scottish hospitality. Originally a purpose-built concert hall, the Caird Hall was constructed during 1914-1922. Today, the Hall has been developed to provide a most versatile venue offering modern, multi-functional facilities whilst maintaining the traditional aura of this splendid building.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries an overcrowded warren of closes and tenements known as the Vault occupied the area of Dundee City Centre now taken up by the Caird Hall, Council Chambers and City Square. In medieval times the site was occupied by St. Clement’s Church and graveyard.
Sir James Caird, who amassed a fortune through the jute trade in Dundee, donated up to £100,000 for the building of a new City Hall and Council Chamber.
The organ was built by Harrison and Harrison of Durham in 1922 and installed in 1923. The organ was designed by the famous blind organist of Edinburgh, Alfred Hollins, and contains 50 speaking stops.
